Dr. Claribel and Miss Etta Cone Papers; Baltimore Museum of Art.

Series 1. Acquisition of the Collection   0.4 Linear feet (.5 box, 7 oversize folders)

Scope and Contents

This series contains 9 subseries: Claribel Cone’s Will and Estate, Etta Cone’s Will, Disbursement of Etta Cone’s Estate, Transfer of Cone Bequest to BMA, Valuation of the Collection, Expertizing Collection, Appraisals, Bequest to Weatherspoon Art Gallery, and Sale of Duplicate Books.

Claribel Cone’s Will and Estate contains photocopies of Claribel’s will (April 1929), a December 1929 inventory of Claribel’s apartments with values and a May 1930 account of her estate. The inventory is not very specific, listing things like “Miss [sic] Lot Books in Closet” and “1 print.”

Etta Cone’s Will contains a photocopy of Etta’s will, two copies of The Baltimore Museum of Art: A Resolution, November 28, 1949, and a November 1969 letter from the Law Offices of Constable, Alexander & Daneker regarding Etta’s will and “questions about the handling of the Cone Collection and Wing.”

Disbursement of Etta Cone’s Estate contains originals and photocopies of lists of works of art from the collections of Etta, Claribel or Fred Cone that were “to be held by the Baltimore Museum of Art for the said Executors for safekeeping pending administration upon the estate of Etta Cone.” Dates from September 8, 1949 to October 28, 1949. Lists are numbered and provide for some works, mainly paintings, sculptures and prints, the title of the work, the artist, the catalog number in Etta’s 1934 catalog and a penciled in value. The information provided for textiles and other decorative arts are less informative. For example, a Large Armoire contains items such as “8 pieces brocade, etc.” or “7 fragments tapestry and embroidery.” Lists of books are even less helpful: “wooden crate containing twenty-two sundry Art books.”

Transfer of Cone Bequest to BMA contains legal documents concerning the transfer of the collection to the BMA such as copies of releases and the final inventory and valuation. Also contains correspondence such as Adelyn Breeskin’s memo regarding the bequest of Fred Cone’s collection to the museum, letters from members of the public congratulation the BMA on the acquisitions, a letter from Breeskin to Philip B. Perlman about Breeskin’s visit to Etta in April 1949 and discussion of Etta’s will, the shipment of several Matisse drawings to Mrs. Allan Stein, and letters from Etta’s apartment that relate to the collection. Also contains a copy of the BMA’s press release about the acquisition. Dates from 1949 to 1950, with some undated material.

Valuation of the Collection contains correspondence regarding Gertrude Rosenthal and Adelyn Breeskin’s valuation of the Cone Collection. Dates from 1950.

Expertizing of the Collection contains letters to various museum professionals about going through the textiles and laces, rugs, furniture, Oriental arts, Renaissance and Baroque decorative arts, and books covers, illuminations and Near Eastern minor arts in the Cone Collection to determine what items were of value and worth keeping in the BMA’s collections. Also includes letters to Philip B. Perlman at the Department of Justice and J. K. Brigstocke at the Safe Deposit and Trust Company requesting approval for funding the experts as well as selecting them. In addition, includes a one-page list of the textiles and laces in the collection, probably the list created by Adele Weibel after going through the collection, and a list of the jewelry in the collection. Dates from 1949 to 1950.

Appraisals contains lists of textiles taken to D.C. for treatment in July 1956, a letter about a pottery vessel and a figurine head sent to the Chicago Natural History Museum for appraisal and notes about the appraisal, an unidentified list of Asian decorative arts, and a list of Cone jewelry taken to Kirk’s to be cleaned in December 1949 with a draft of the list. Dates from 1949 – 1950 and 1956. Finally, the subseries includes a sealed envelope with two notes stapled to it. “Piece of bronze belonging to the Egyptian Cat” is written on the envelope in what appears to be Etta Cone's handwriting, one note was stapled closed and contained a key (outside of note says “key, mede…..an, Morocco (Sudan), tooled [?] P…), other note lists 3 “Negro sculpture,” 1 small Indonesian figure and 1 Egyptian cat. In 2010, the envelope was unsealed and the piece of bronze inside was added to the Conservation Department's collection of fragments.

Bequest to Weatherspoon Art Gallery contains correspondence between BMA and Safe Deposit and Trust Company regarding valuation of the duplicates to go to the Weatherspoon. The series also contains a letter from the Weatherspoon with the original listing of items in the Cone Bequest that went to them as well as an inventory of the collection in 1974. Dates from 1949, 1950, 1974 and 1985.

Sale of Duplicate Books contains correspondence relating to the sale of duplicate books in the Cone Bequest. The letters concern mainly the solicitation of bids from various book dealers and the eventual sale of the lot to H. Bittner and Company. Also includes various copies of lists of books in the Cone Collection. Dates from 1953 and 1965.

Series 4. Works in Cone Collection   0.2 Linear feet (.5 box)

Scope and Contents

This series contains six subseries: General, Thannhauser Monet/Gauguin, Kota Reliquary Analysis Project, Conservation and Housing, Lists of Works, and Frames.

General contains correspondence between Adelyn Breeskin and Georges Wildenstein and Adele Weibel regarding the publication of an article about a Point de France flounce in the Cone Collection in Gazette des Beaux Arts and a typescript of Weibel’s article. The subseries also contains correspondence between Breeskin and M. J. Gladstone of  The Print Collector’s Quarterly about his interest in having an article written about a Matisse print in the Cone Collection and a note from Lydia Delectorskaya with an enclosed photograph of a chair in the Cone Collection that was inscribed by Matisse. In addition, the subseries includes a list of “Cone items kept for equipment and installation,” a note about “Bamberger rug – (gift – memory of Miss Cone),” a “blurb” on  Illustrations to Poems of Mallarmé by Henri Matisse, a list of references to the Cone Collection in Gertrude Stein’s  Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, notes about date changes to be made in Matisse labels, notes on some books in the Cone Collection, and a report by Gertrude Rosenthal about “critical comments on various paintings on exhibition by foreign scholars visiting the BMA in 1954.”

Thannhauser Monet/Gauguin contains mainly correspondence and memos about two works originally in the Cone Collection that were purchased from Thannhauser and later determined to be fakes. The paintings, a supposed Monet and Gauguin, were returned to Thannhauser and exchanged for Degas’ Head of a Roman Girl in 1957. The subseries also includes photographs of the paintings and several exhibition catalogues that show works similar to the fake Monet. Dates from 1957 and 1961.

Kota Reliquary Analysis Project contains correspondence regarding mentions of African objects in the Cone Papers, the Cone’s Kota reliquary and its analysis at Winterthur, and by Gordon K. Saltar and Roy Seiber. A wood specimen taped to an index card is also included. Also, numerous notes about African objects purchased by the Cones and copies of photographs of the Kota reliquary, an African cup and a chicken sculpture. Dates from 1975 to 1977.

Conservation and Housing contains correspondence from 1950 regarding the purchase of glass for framing paintings, framing of the paintings, and lists of which paintings needed conservation treatment. The subseries also includes Caroline Keck’s notes on the condition of the Cone paintings in 1964.

Lists of Works contains various lists not related to other materials in the Cone Collection, including lists of works on paper, Matisse’s Maquette drawings for Poesies de Stephane Mallarmé, sculpture, paintings, reproductions in the 1955 and 1967 Cone catalogues, and an annotated list of “Masterpieces from the Cone Collection of The Baltimore Museum of Art.” Some lists include insurance valuations of works. The subseries also includes index cards found in a box labeled “Contents of New Cabinet,” which list numerous prints owned by the Cones. The cards may be a listing of the contents of a cabinet that were made at the time of the Expertizing in 1949. They list the contents of each drawer and portfolio. Titles of works are generally not included. The original box was discarded due to preservation concerns and its lack of research value.

Frames contains correspondence, clippings and publications related to the reframing of the Cone Collection in 1986. The paintings in the collection were taken out of the frames selected by the Cones at the time of their purchase and placed in very simple strip frames. The change created an outcry from many of the Museum’s patrons. Several letters from the public are included in the subseries. It also includes drafts of Brenda Richardson’s essay for the 1993 pamphlet, In the Spotlight: What’s in a Frame?, and a copy of an article referenced in the essay. Material dates from 1986 and 1991 to 1992.

Rights to Reproduce contains letters from publishers and textile companies about making and selling reproductions of works in the Cone Collection.

Laura Cone contains letters between Laura Cone and Adelyn Breeskin both before and after the death of Etta Cone, mostly concerning Etta’s bequest and the Cone Memorial Exhibition at the BMA and the plans for the Cone Wing. Dates from 1949 to 1953.

Marguerite Duthuit-Matisse contains letters requesting reproductions of Matisse works in the Cone Collection. Dates from 1952 and 1970 to 1971.

Ellen Hirschland contains correspondence regarding Hirschland’s concerns about the 1967 Cone catalogue revision, and her and her daughter Nancy Ramage’s visit to the BMA to do research in the Cone Papers. Some other correspondence with Hirschland relates to exhibitions and other matters and is filed under the appropriate topic. Dates from 1964, 1967, 1992 and 1997.

Louisiana Auction Exchange contains copies of e-mails and memos about the sale of what were purported to be works from the collection of Etta Cone at the Louisiana Auction Exchange in 1997. The works turned out to be fakes. Also includes a copy of the auction catalog and a few clippings about the auction.

Pierre Matisse contains letters regarding the dates of Matisse’s Odalisque and  Peintre dans les Oliviers and obtaining copies of Etta’s 1934 catalogue after her death. Dates from 1949 to 1950 and 1956.

Teresa Bernstein Meyerowitz contains correspondence with the artist Teresa Bernstein Meyerowitz regarding her offer to sell her painting, The Cone Sisters, scheduling an exhibition of her husband William Meyerowitz’s works, and a copy of an article she wrote about the Cones. Dates from 1990, 1993 and 1995.

Museum of Modern Art contains letters mostly from Alfred Barr regarding Matisse works in the Cone Collection, letters from Matisse in the Cone Papers, and requests for reproductions. Dates from 1950 to 1954.

General contains chronologically arranged correspondence not relating to specific subjects or from frequent correspondents. Very general informational requests that do not shed light on the Cone Collection or the activities of the BMA have been removed. The subseries also includes a 1980 letter from Dr. Morris Saffron regarding a copy of the 1925 catalogue for the exhibit of French art at the BMA that may have been annotated by Claribel Cone. The catalogue is also included, but the annotation does not appear to be in the hand of Claribel. It is possible it could be Etta’s handwriting. Dates from 1930 to present.

Gertrude Stein Material from Yale contains photocopies of correspondence between Etta Cone and Gertrude Stein as well as Stein’s original manuscript for, “Two Women,” from the Yale University Library. This material is also available on microfilm in the BMA Library.

Edward Dwight Material contains notes and correspondence that include a small portion of Dwight’s research notes and correspondence regarding a possible exhibition of the Steins’ art collections. Correspondents include Donald Gallup at the Yale Library, Lamont Moore at the Yale University Art Gallery, Carl Van Vechten and Alice B. Toklas. The subseries also includes two sets of photographs with overlays identifying works of art in the Stein apartments in Paris.
