Trailing by 5 points and needing a pin to pull out the win, Matt Dillon (130) pinned his opponent with 6 seconds left to give East the come-from-behind victory. The match also featured a battle between two returning state placers at heavyweight, where Tony Johnson scored an 8-3 decision against Wesly Taylor. The win moved Tony to 20-0 this year. Also winning for the Hawks: Tim Sizemore, Ron Conley, James Canfield, Chris Moon, Kody and Kent Pierson.

Lakota East competed this past weekend in the 1st annual National Wrestling Coaches Association High School Super Quad. This event was held before the NWCA Collegiate National Duals held at Ohio State University's St. John Arena. Teams competing in the event were Lakota East (2002 8th DI Ohio State Tournament), St. Paris Graham (2002 DII Ohio State Champions and currently ranked #2 in the country), Mater Dei (IN) (8 time running Indiana State Champions and currently ranked 12th in the country), Parkersburg South (WV) (2002 West Virginia State Champions), and Lisbon Beaver Local. On Friday, East competed against St. Paris Graham and Mater Dei. East was defeated by Graham by a score of 61-9. Tim Sizemore (135 lbs.) defeated Tyler Schlater (State Qualifier) by a score of 9-3. Tony Johnson recorded a fall at 275 lbs. East was also defeated by Mater Dei, IN by a score of 58-13. Tim Sizemore notched a 7-3 decison over Scott (Indiana State Placewinner). Rob Conley recorded a 15-6 decision at 152 lbs. and Tony Johnson recorded his 15th fall of the season at 275 lbs. Tony is now 22-0. Taking on the best competition in the country should prove to be a very valuable experience for East.

Despite the fact that East had 2 starters out of the line-up (Matt Mayles and Ryan Schmittauer) and one other wrestler default out of the tournament after the semi-final round due to an injury (James Canfield), the team still managed to put together a good performance.
Capturing GMC Championships for East
Sophomore Kody Pierson, junior Tim Sizemore, junior Chris Moon, and junior Tony Johnson.
Sophomore Kent Pierson and junior Rob Conley finished 2nd. Senior Matt Dillon finished 3rd and sophomore David Daly finished 4th. This was Sizemore and Johnson's 2nd GMC Title. Tony Johnson also received the GMC Wreslter of the Year Award. Next up for East is the Sectional Championships to be held at Wilmington H.S. on February 14-15.

This past weekend (February 21-22) East finished 2nd in the District Championships held at Wilmington H.S. East was edged out (2 pts.) by St. X. This was East's highest District finish in it's 6 years of existance. All 8 wrestlers that East qualified for the District Championships placed in the top 6. Tim Sizemore (135 lbs.) and Tony Johnson (275 lbs.) captured their 1st District Championships. Senior, Matt Dillon (130 lbs.) finished as a District Runner-up. Sophomore Twin brothers-Kody Pierson (119 lbs.) and Kent Pierson (125 lbs.) finished 4th. These 5 wrestlers are automatic qualifiers for the Ohio State Championships to be held at Ohio State University on February 27-March 1. Matt Mayles (103 lbs.) and Rob Conley (152 lbs.) both finished 5th and will act as alternates for the State Championships. Chris Moon (215 lbs.) placed 6th.
