This event has grown from a school effort at Washington-Lee to a countywide event involving students from all middle and high schools in
The conference is coordinated by the Latin American Student Congress or Congreso Estudiantil Latino Americano (CELA), a countywide student organization of representatives from the Latinos en Acción and Latinas Leading Tomorrow (Wakefield), Latino Club and Friends and the International Club (Yorktown), and Washington-Lee’s Latin American Students Association (LASA).
The purpose of this one-day conference is to:
Foster leadership among Latino students by involving the students in the coordination of the event;
Inspire Latino students and provide positive role models by bringing successful Latinos as keynote speakers and career/college presenters;
Expose students to a college campus by holding the conference in a local college or university; and
Provide college and career information.
The students of CELA played a key role in the planning and organizing of the event. Students work with the direction and support of secondary bilingual resource assistants to select the theme, plan the program, identify workshop topics and provide support on the day of the conference.
Students will convene in the morning for the keynote speaker, Vanessa Cárdenas, Director of Ethnic Media, Center for American Progress and a student presentation, which address the theme of the conference, “Facing the Future Together.” Students will then participate in an interactive workshop reflecting on future goals and the challenges ahead.
The event is co-sponsored by Arlington Public Schools, the Department of Instruction offices of ESOL/HILT, Office of Minority Achievement, Escuela Bolivia, the Department of Student Services and the Department of School and Community Relations in partnership with the George Mason University College of Education and Human Development.
